It's not a bad idea to take a drop if your passion is engineering. If you take do honours, you may later regret because you might not get interest in that and hence can't succeed much. But, if you follow your passion, there are high chances that you might succeed if you dedicate yourself and do hardwork.
Since, you have got 71%, you must check whether you are in the top 20 percentile this year. If you are there, then congrats, you won't have to give improvement for boards and as you would fulfill the criteria to get admission in NITs/ IITs and other colleges, i.e., either 75% marks or be in the top 20 percentile. If you are not present, then you have to reappear for the board exam in the drop year to improve your percentage. So, it would require extreme dedication and hard work to do the preparation for the boards and the JEE in the drop year. But it's not so difficult to achieve. You just have to plan a strategy and work accordingly to get your passion, i.e., engineering.
