The first attempt is considered when you gave the 12th boards same year and the second attempt that very next year to it. Even if you do not attempt JEE Mains papers, it'll still be considered your first attempt. So, you can attempt JEE Advanced only twice provided you cleared JEE Mains cutoff in your respective category. Good luck.
