    RQ is the ratio of carbon dioxide released to ratio of oxygen consumed.

    When substances are poor in oxygen than carbohydrates , the value of respiratory quotient is less than one.

    Ex., fats are oxidised in respiration. And fats contains less amount of oxygen than carbohydrates , thus requiring more oxygen for oxidation.
