Type 1 vs Type 2 diabetes? Which is an autoimmune disorder??
It is insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM).
It is an autoimmune disorder in which body's immune system destroys beta cells of pancreas.
It commonly develops in people younger than 20, hence generally known as "juvenile onset diabetes".
Type II Diabetes -
It is non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM).
Target cells become less sensitive to insulin (insulin resistance).
Obesity is a major cause.
It occurs in later stages of life, hence known as "maturity onset diabetes".
Type I Diabetes (IDDM) is an autoimmune disorder.
Hello Ram Mohan
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. An autoimmune disease results when the body's system for fighting infection (the immune system) turns against a part of the body. In diabetes, the immune system attacks the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas and destroys them. (Source: Google)
