What do you need to know about PGDM, MBA?
For someone who is aspiring to be an entrepreneur or go high up to a management level in a job, a management program like PGDM / MBA can prove to be very helpful.
A study of management subjects provides knowledge of the fundamentals of business, helps in understanding the market trends, the management skills needed to handle a successful business, provides practical knowledge through group discussions, internships, projects. It helps to improve the career growth. Soft skills like communication, leadership, motivation are taken to the next level.
PGDM and MBA are the best options if one is considering a career in business. PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management) is a diploma which is offered by autonomous colleges in contrast to MBA ( Master of Business Administration) which is offered by recognized Universities.
Though both are considered similar, there are some small differences between the two. PGDM is more practical and teaches more technical aspects as opposed to an MBA degree. A PGDM provides exposure to real life business situations. As a PGDM is offered in autonomous universities, the curriculum is altered whenever needed to fit the market needs and current trend.
Generally, a management program covers the fundamentals of the major aspects like finance, marketing, human resources, and leadership. Elective courses are offered in these enabling the student to deepen the knowledge in the specified areas. The most common specializations of the management programs that are commonly offered are marketing, finance, human resources, operations, logistics and so on.
In recent days, specialised MBA programmes are also gaining popularity. These offer management knowledge in the specified field like healthcare, real estate, etc. These give focuses the study of the management and business skills with respect to that field.
The management study can be part-time, full time, executive and online programmes.
Of all these, full time management programs can be more rigorous and effective. The part-time programmes offer flexibility and ability to work on the remaining time. This helps you continue your career while pursuing a management study side by side. An executive programme would require minimum work experience. This is usually pursued by those who want to go to a higher level of leadership. Also, this is faster than a part – time programs. An online programme helps you to take the classes at your own pace while not compromising on your personal and professional commitments.
Whichever the course you choose, the key is to choose a reputed college because more than anything else, the environment and the faculty interactions play a major role in improving your management skills.

Hi Aarush,
The answer is simple, an “MBA” is Management of Business Administration and “PGDM” is Post Graduate Diploma in Management. Only difference between them is their names and nothing else. MBA or PGDMs are not treated differently by corporates. A B-School should be chosen on its ranking, curriculum or placements rather than by the degree or diploma they offer. An MBA is a degree offered by Government or private universities and the colleges affiliated with them. A PGDM is a diploma offered by colleges recognised by government of India’s nodal body for technical education called All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
Even the country’s top most institutes such as IIMs and IIMs offer Post Graduate Program in Management and not MBA as they are neither a university nor affiliated to one. But after the passing of IIM Bill 2017, they offer MBA degree. The colleges that offer PGDM are at par with MBA offering colleges. Many top PGDM B-schools have received MBA Equivalence from Government body AIU, and their PGDM is treated at par with MBA when it comes for higher studies like M.Phil. or Ph.D.
Below are some top reasons to choose an MBA program,
Good MBA programs offered by top government or private universities such as FMS Delhi, IIFT, JBIMS, XIMB, NMIMS, SIBM are the most sought-after management courses and the PGDM offered by other top B-Schools and IIMs are at par with each other. MBA and PGDM are more similar in nature but there are some differences such as,
- An AIU equivalence certificate is needed with PGDM whereas, it is not required to be accompanied with any MBA degree
- MBA is a globally recognised degree and is acceptable by top recruiters around the globe. Top B-Schools around the world offer MBA degree and not PGDM diploma
- Foreign universities need MBA degree instead of diploma to offer admission in Ph.D. or Doctoral program
- MBA colleges have created a huge alumni base as compared to the PGDM colleges mostly because these MBA colleges have a very old history as compared to the PGDM colleges
Reasons to choose PGDM program are,
- The course structure for these PGDM colleges is more industry oriented. This is done so to keep the curriculum in accordance with the latest industry developments.
- Many reputed colleges in India as well as abroad give more preference to PGDM over MBA as PGDM offers more practical insights than an MBA does and hence gives an edge provided if it’s done from a reputed college
- Because these institutes are autonomous, they offer better placement offers than MBA
- It is easier to get education loans if you are going to study in an institute backed by AICTE. Students can easily apply loans from a private or nationalised bank and arranging money for their fees will no longer be a burden to them
