72 percentile in JEE Mains would mean that around 72 % of students who appeared in same shift as yours have raw score lower than or equal to your raw score and rest 28% students have scored raw score more than your score.
Percentile is not same as percentage and both have different ways of being calculated.
Percentage is simply marks scores divided by total marks multiplied by 100 but percentile is calculated considering factors like the no. of students scoring lower marks than you and total students appearing in your shift.
So the formula for calculating percentile is-
100 * no. of candidates appeared in the 'session' with raw score equal to or less than the candidate / Total no. of candidates appeared in the
session

For eg aprox 875000 students wrote jee main exam in january so your rank will be aproximately
(100-72)*875000/100 =245000
