Generally, we write the gate for 100 marks but gate score will be calculated for 1000. Gate score or Merit score is nothing but normalized marks.There will be more one set of papers each year so we cannot give ranks in the same for the students who write different set of papers because the level of toughness will not be the same so what government do is instead of giving ranks based on marks it will give a gate score i.e nothing but giving your score on comparing with top 10 students who write same paper.
