Catenation is a process of atoms of the same elements forming a ring shape called chains by strong bonding.
When the bonds are open ended it is called an open chain compound and when the atoms are bonded together in a chain it is called a cyclic compound.
Since carbon atoms are small it shows high catenation and strong bonds are formed between 2 carbon atoms.
When M-M bond dissociation energy is maximum, higher will be the catenation, and thus carbon shows high bonding.
