This decision to implement 14 percent IIT reservation for girls has been taken by MHRD to promote higher education of women in India. The decision, however, has raised questions and confusion regarding the admission of male candidates. So in order to increase female representation in IITs 800 supernumerary seats have been created which are exclusively for female candidates. These seats are the extra seats created for the female students and do not impact the seats of gender-neutral pool in IITs. As of the new 5356 girl candidates have got rank in JEE Advance and are eligible for both gender neutral seats as well as female only seats.
