IIT JAM is held for admission to various post graduate (PG) science programmes including integrated Ph.D, M.Sc, joint M.Sc-Ph.D, M.Sc-Ph.D dual degree, M.Sc-M.Tech, M.Sc-M.S (Research), Ph.D dual degree and other post bachelor degree programmes offered at IISc Bangalore and other Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), respectively.

IIT JAMis an entrance exam conducted by IITs every year to provide admission into various MSc ( Full time), MSc-Phd dual degree, Int-Phd, MSc-Mtech and other post graduate programs.
There are seven papers (objective) on the following subjects:-
- Biological Sciences(BL)
- Biotechnology (BT)
- Chemistry (CY)
- Geology (GG)
- Mathematics (MA)
- Mathematical Statistics (MS)
- Physics (PH)
