The steady decrease in the size of the atoms and ions of the rare earth elements with increasing atomic number from Lanthanum to Lutetium is called Lanthanoid Contraction. The lanthanoid contractions keeps the rate earth ions about the same size and as they all exhibit the +3 oxidation state, the chemical properties are similar that atleast small amounts of each one are present in every rare earth mineral.
