opening rank means the least rank of the candidate which took the admission in it and closing rank means the maximum rank of candidate at which he took admission in.

So basically opening rank is the minimum rank of all the the students took the admission in a particular course

For example

There are 10 seats in CS in some college X.

And the rank of all the candidates who took admission are: 125, 645, 975, 1345, 345, 876, 349, 568, 987, 1000

Then opening rank is 125

And closing rank is 1345

So if opening and closing rank is same then only 1 student has taken admission there.

For example there are 10 seats and only 1 student took admission in that branch so 9 seats will remain vacant so closing and opening rank would be same as that of that student who took admission there as he the only 1 to take admission in that particular course.

It's quite easy. OR simply means opening rank while CR means closing rank. So , opening rank means the least rank of the candinate which can get admission . Whereas closing rank means the last rank at which seat is allotted to a student. Students who have scores less than the Closing Rank is not considered for the admission in any of the participating colleges.
