what is National knowledge network used (NKN) for?

National knowledge network is a multi - gigabit NREN, whose purpose is to provide a unified high speed network backbone for Educational Institutions in India.
Role of NKN is
•Establishing a high speed backbone connectivity which will enable knowledge and information sharing amongst NKN connected Institutes.
•Ebabling collaborative research development and innovation amongst NKN connected Institutes.
•Facilitsting advanced distance education in specialized fields such as Engineering, Science, Medicine etc.
•Facilitating an ultra high speed backbone for e- Governance.
•Facilitating integration of different sectoral networks in the field of research , Education, health, commerce and governance.
•Link to global network to collaborate with research communities across the globe.
National Knowledge Network is a project that aims to establish a strong Indian Network for Knowledge Society. It will establish a high speed backbone connectivity that will enable information and knowledge sharing among NKN Connected Institutions. It will elaborate research development and innovation among these Institutions. In other words, Institutions that have NKN network will be able to share information, knowledge, research and distance education techniques in the fields like Engineering, Science, Medicine, etc.
