The atom in the excited state E2 ( higher energy state) returns to the ground state E1 ( lower energy state) by emitting a photon of energy hv without the action of an external agency. Such an emission of radiation which is not triggered by an external influence is called spontaneous emission.

Spontaneous emission is one in which a system transmits from an excited state to a lower energy state and it emits amount of energy that is quantized in the form of photon.It is due to spontaneous decay of excited state of atoms and ions.It takes place without interaction with other photons and the direction as well as phase are random.
