Gerund and present participle both have identical (Verb-ing ) forms.
To differentiate between the both forms, you need to understand that -
Gerund (verb-ing) form acts as a noun in a sentence whereas Present participle (verb- ing ) form acts as an adjective to make sentence in continuous tense .
To make it simply understand here is an example:
Playing is good for physical and mental health.
(Here playing acts as noun so playing is gerund)
After playing for two hours, we were tired.
(In this sentence , playing is present participle)
