what is the history of Kumbh mela?
The main ritual of Kumbh Mela is bathing in rivers. It is believed that bathing in holy water frees them from their past sins and frees them from the cycle of Moksha or birth and death . A huge tent city "pop-up megacity" has been built around the Delta in Prayagraj so that millions of people can drown in the holy rivers. kumbh mela 2021 (https://devdhamyatra.com/blog/history-of-kumbh-mela-with-facts-based-information)
Hii,
Kumbh means pot or pitcher, while mela means festival or fair.
According to ancient Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu released drops of an immortality nectar (carried in a kumbh ) in four places where the holiday is now celebrated —
Nashik, Prayagraj, Ujjain and Haridwar.
The festival rotates approximately every three years through these cities, with the exact dates, places and length largely determined by astrology.
In 2017, UNESCO added the festival to the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, Citing the event’s “central spiritual role in the country.”
Hope this will help you,
All the very best!!
