What Practical HR Skills should MBA HR Students Must learn
Hello there,
For MBA HR students, practical skills are just as important as theoretical knowledge. Along with understanding HR concepts, it is important to develop skills that are actually used in day-to-day HR work and can help you perform confidently in internships and placements.
One of the most important areas to develop is Interviewing and Communication. You should be comfortable with professional email writing, conducting and participating in interviews, active listening, presentations, negotiation and workplace communication.
You should also learn HR Documentation, including preparing offer letters, appointment letters, HR policies, onboarding documents, maintaining employee records and handling exit documentation. These are common tasks in HR departments.
Another important area is Recruitment and Talent Acquisition. Learn how to write job descriptions, source candidates, screen resumes, coordinate interviews and understand how Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) are used during recruitment.
HR Analytics and Excel are also highly useful skills. Try to become comfortable with advanced Excel functions such as Pivot Tables and XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, along with creating basic dashboards, analysing employee data and understanding important HR metrics.
A basic understanding of Payroll and Compensation is equally valuable. You should know concepts such as CTC, salary structures, deductions, PF, ESI, bonuses, incentives and the basic payroll process.
It is also important to develop knowledge of Labour Laws and HR Compliance, including applicable employment laws, workplace policies, POSH compliance and other statutory requirements. You don't necessarily need to become a legal expert, but you should understand the fundamentals.
Learning about HR Information Systems (HRIS) can give you an additional advantage. HR professionals use HR software for maintaining employee records, attendance, leave management, recruitment, payroll and performance management.
Finally, understanding Learning and Development (L&D) can be helpful. Learn the basics of training-needs analysis, designing training programmes and evaluating their effectiveness.
For placements, I would particularly recommend focusing on Excel and HR Analytics, Recruitment, Payroll basics, Labour Laws, HRIS, and Communication and Interviewing skills. Developing these practical skills alongside your MBA studies can give you a strong foundation for starting your HR career.
Best wishes for your preparation and your HR journey!
