What privileges are given to OBC in NTSE??

The government of India has approved 27%  reservation of scholarships for students of OBC category students in the second stage of national talent search examination (NTSE), a test conducted by NCERT to award scholarship to students, from 2019  . As per the current reservation policy there is reservation of 15% for SC students, 7.5% for ST students, 3% for persons with physical disability.

Prakash Javadekar, Union human resources development minister, said that the government has already increased the rates of scholarship and is planning to double the number of scholarships from 1000 to 2000 annually. The scholarship amount is expected to be increased to around Rs. 5000 in couple of years.

NTSE is conducted by NCERT to give scholarships to highly intellect, skilled and deserving students. It is for secondary school level students. The exam is conducted every year in two levels:

1. Stage 1 (State Level)

2. Stage 2 (National level)

The registration process for the same starts from around second week of September. The paper is conducted through offline mode and has only objective type questions. For the both the stages paper is divided into two parts:

1. Mental Ability Test (TAT)

2. Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)- science, mathematics, social science and english language.

There is negative marking for every wrong question and no marks is deducted for unattempted question. Students of class 10 can also appear for the exam but they should have cleared their class 9 from a recognised board with minimum 60% marks. Students who have 80% can appear for stage 2.

Around 1000 scholarships are awarded every year to deserving candidates. Scholarship of around Rs. 1250 per month is given to class 11-12 students, around Rs. 2000 per month to UG and PG students, and the amount for Ph.D. students is fixed according to norms of UGC.

From NTSE 2018-19, an addition of 27% reservation has been made in the exam in both the stages. Thus, every state will first have to make space for students of reserved categories and then distribute them to General category candidates.

As per the current reservation scheme for NTSE, 15% scholarships are reserved for students belonging to the SC category, 7.5% scholarships for students belonging to the ST category and 3% for persons with disabilities. The MHRD is planning to extend the 27% reservation to OBC students as well from 2019 in both NTSE Stage I as well as Stage II.
