What rank is required in advance?

There are around 9000 seats in IITs so any rank within this figure will ensure admission into an IIT. However, things become a lot complicated with the reservation and other factors come into the picture. If you are a General candidate then the safest rank for you is around 5000.
Also, ranks are not only helpful in ensuring admissions but also decides the branch of your BTech degree. Branches like CS and MECHANICAL are higher on the list and branches like METALLURGY are a bit on a lower side.
Same goes for IITs, some are on the higher side like Kanpur, Bombay while some on lower like Mandi. The culmination of all these factors contributes to the admission in an IIT.
However, if you just want an admission rank around 6-7k is the safe rank even for a general candidate.
