There is always a tradeoff between two, but my personal experience proves that its wiser to choose a better college, any course will land you good job if you work hard, have fair understanding of market and good management skills.
But if the college is mesiocre it will hamper tour chances for lucrative job opportunity.
Top 25bschools have an average package of 10lpa and are reputed enough amongst recruiters, so your branch doesn't matter, its the dedicated effort putin by the college and its brand jndex which is pivotal.

You should always choose the course as per your interest. It is tough to choose better college or desied branch. If you are getting top college and your desired branch in average college you should go for top college. Always choose the college in which placements are good.
Good Luck!!

If you want to end up with a good job then always choose a better college rather than course. A college is ranked better not Only on placements but also on teaching faculty, resources, infrastructure and different facilities. So a better college not only assure you better placements but also a complete development of your personality.
Say if you are doing engineering and you have two options either to do Electronic engineering from top NIT or do Metallurgical engineering from an old IIT. I can assure you if you choose IIT over course you will get a lot more opportunity to learn and grow yourself rather than going for course.
On long term an overall learning is much better than sacrificing that opportunity for a course. If you are gonna be doing post graduation program like MBA then even after completing your degree with a major in some steam you can change your domain in corporate world. It might be a little difficult but if your basic learning is strong then there is no problem in that.
So college over course is better but make sure you see that there is a reasonable difference between the two colleges. If difference between the two colleges is minimal then you can think of stepping down a bit and go with the course.
All the best!!
