Hi. We breathe during chewing. It is only during swallowing that breathing ceases. (respiration and mechanical breathing are two separate terms which must not be confused. Breathing is the simple process of inhalation and exhalation, respiration also involves exchange of gases in the lungs).
In adult humans, swallowing usually starts during the expiratory phase of breathing. During swallowing, breathing (expiration) is paused, and respiration resumes with continued expiration after swallowing
