Which is better taking mechanical engineering and going for aeronautics or straight away taking aeronautics after 12th.
Hi Ostin
Aeronautical engineering is an engineering branch which comes under the school of Mechanical engineering. Aeronautical engineering specializes particularly on the design and development of aircrafts and spacecrafts. Now aeronautical engineering is a highly specialised stream unlike Mechanical engineering where you get to study everything that falls under the domain of mechanical engineering like machines , power generation , automobiles , aeroplanes , rockets etc. Now before you make a choice on the engineering branch you wish to choose after your 12th , there are a few points that you should keep in mind before making the decision.
- Aeronautical engineering is extremely specialised unlike Mechanical engineering where you will get lots of opportunities in various industries involving mechanical engineering unlike aeronautical where you will only get job opportunities in the aerospace sector.
- Job opportunities for aeronautical engineers in India is extremely less compared to mechanical engineering.
- You have to go abroad to get more opportunities however you will get good job opportunities in India itself if you are a Mechanical engineering graduate.
- It has been seen that aerospace companies hire mechanical engineers to do the job of an aeronautical engineer as mechanical engineers have a more broader knowledge of the mechanical engineering field than aeronautical engineer.
If you are going to do your undergraduate in India and would like to work in a job directly after graduation then I would recommend you take up mechanical engineering as there aren't many opportunities in India for aeronautical engineers. Although there are companies like Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL ) ,ISRO ,DRDO etc which do hire aeronautical engineers , however the number of job vacancies is very low. However if you are prepared to go abroad to do your masters in aeronautical engineering right after your undergraduation , then you could take up aeronautical engineering in your undergraduation. However if you are a mechanical engineering undergraduate , you can always do your masters in aeronautical engineering for your post graduation. Almost all engineering colleges in India have a mechanical engineering program . There are only a few old IITs that have Aeronautical /Aerospace engineering program and a few top private universities like SRM and Manipal which too have courses in aerospace engineering. However the above points discussed applies for all the universities offering aerospace engineering in India on the grounds of placement and job opportunities.
I hope I have been able to answer your query. Good luck for your future.
Thanks
Both are top branches. But Aerospace engineering demand is really high in Outside India and Mechanical engineering demand is high in India itself. It depends on your interest what course you want to study and also on the college as there are only top few colleges that offers Aerospace engineering branch.
Good luck.
