According to a declaration made on June 10 by the United Nations General Assembly, next year will not only be the World Year of Physics but also the International Year of Physics.
Conventionally, only the UNGA has the authority to name an international year. The International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) both proclaimed 2005 the World Year of Physics in 2002 and 2003, respectively. The General Assembly's decision is the last requirement for the WYP to acquire international recognition.
