Why do not the female students prefer Mechanical Engineering?
Hello
1- In India most engineering students don't have an idea of what branch to join before they become eligible for engineering. A huge part of the decision-making process depends upon your entrance exam score. I require a high score, and as I have seen most of the girls who score high are advised to take Computer Engineering or even Electronics by career counselors or parents as these are considered safe branches with the booming IT industry. Yes, I am saying that most people don't join a branch because of specific interest but what it has to offer in terms of a package at the end of 4 years. So girls are advised to join comps or electronics.
Thus the 'female deficiency' is shared by other branches too but it's most pronounced in Mech.
2. Mech does involve heavy lifting and getting your hands dirty. Especially if you want to make a good Mech engineer.
The best example is working in the college race car club. You need to constantly file , shape, weld , metal and you're working with oils. This Is mechanically taxing. And most of my female friends would simply get irked by the amount of patience this kind of job requires.
3. Ohk so this might be a problem only in India. The very prevalence of a boy majority would discourage some parents from allowing their daughters to join Mech.
4. Finally the point I feel has been most important. Mech engineering deals with cars, aircraft, engines, machines, all of them are what we can call 'Boys Toys'. I have never heard a group of girls involved in a serious or Sometimes even heated discussion about which engine is better which fighter aircraft the best which naval warship the most formidable.
Hello Robin,
First of all you are advised to not to ask questions which are non-academic. This is not a fun site. People here are trying to do something good and investing their time to help students. But you will surely get answer to your question.
Reasons :
1. It is the toughest branch. Not too tough but you just can't clear it by theoritical knowledge only.
2. You rarely get office job, if you get core placement. You have to work in a company's workshop or industry.
3. Girls prefer office job more rather than field work or you can say non-AC jobs.
Hope this helps
