Merit

The Government Medical College doctor generally has a better academic record and mbbs entrance performance than his or her private counterparts. It's quite common even for students who barely meet the minimum criterion (pass marks in PCB) to make it to private colleges.

Price

Private medical education costs a lot of money, the pay structure is poorly regulated and MCI is lax in control. It makes absolutely no sense to go for 5 million rupee MBBS, when close to 30,000 seats are available almost for free at Govt. Institutions. MD costs in crores. And with fair medical practices the amount cannot be recovered in a decade. Further, it has been argued that such huge debt early in the career can often distort the clinical conscience.

Education/Training

There shouldn't be much difference in didactic teaching of Govt. & private medical colleges. Private medical colleges often have better infrastructure, equipment and library compared to the average Govt college. But Govt Hospitals are making a turnaround all over the country by major upgradation. Private medical colleges often hire retired Govt Professors or part timers just to meet the MCI criteria. Such teaching can sometimes be inadequate. Clinical training can be a problem at Private colleges with less patient occupancy, less procedural exposure and less labor intensive residency programmes. There have been numerous questions raised about the fairness of MB & MD exams conducted by private varsities.

Patients

The patients are important teachers in our education system. The clientele of a private medical college can be unsuitable for serving as clinical subjects. The number and diversity of cases can be lacking as paying patients are a sorry minority in India. The patient population will naturally be diverse in govt. Whether quantity ensures quality can be a valid question. But that's a question more pertinent for the patient, quantity most often will translate into quality for the learning doctor.

Job Opportunities

Private practice transcends the question of private versus Govt education. If we disregard practice, there are few places where a private medical college doctor will be preferred over a Govt doctor. And those few places will necessarily be for-profit outfits enslaving doctors to increase billing.

Hello Ajay, Government seat is more valuable than private seat because government seat is provided only on the basis of merit while the private seat is provided to those who come through paid quota seats which suggests that the students getting admission through government quota are more meritorious than private quota students. Government seats costs way less than private seats.
