why potassium ferrocyanide complex violets EAN ????
EAN is Effective Atomic Number. And it is calculated using the formula EAN=Z-X+Y where, Z is the atomic number of the metal, X is the no.of electrons that are lost in the formation of ion and Y is the no.of electrons donated by the Ligands. The EAN rule says that a metal atom or ion continues to accept electron pairs from the ligands until the total no.of electrons around the metal atom or ion in the complex becomes equal to the atomic number of the nearest noble gas. The Atomic number of Potassium Ferracyanide is 26. 3 is the atomic number, and 12 are the no.of electrons donated by the ligands. Going by that. 26-3+23 =35. EAN is 35 and doesn't attain the nearest noble gas configuration.
