You have to appear for 3 Stages in the UPSC IES Exam Pattern:
1) UPSC IES Prelims Stage-
(a) Paper 1- General Studies &Engineering Aptitude
(b) Paper 2-

Mathematics (20 MCQ ) - 40 marks
General Aptitude (40 MCQ) - 80 marks

Mostly questions asked in the exam are direct and formula based.
