I think you are trying to say that you are taking admission this year in Btech Electrical Engineering branch. And you want to take GATE exam. Its great if you are planning to prepare so early. You will have ample time to prepare well. Just give attention in class and follow the course structure at hostel too. Complete the syllabi at time parallel to your classes. Watch videos of topics you don't understand. A lot of GATE materials are available online. You can also join classes if you wish.

I think getting IT in Maharaja Surajmal Institute of Technology Delhi is a good option because of wait for one year and get preparation for IIT Main again, if you think or fully confident that you score top 1 percent then it is good option but if you not so confident and you may just think about just crack the IIT then you may go for the first option and if you interesting in higher study then you may apply for GATE.
