Is there any course a commerce background student can do to get into the Indian armed forces

Gregary mathew K.B 24th Apr, 2025

Yes, commerce background students can definitely join the Indian Armed Forces by choosing the right path. One of the best options is to prepare for the Combined Defence Services (CDS) Exam conducted by UPSC after graduation. Although some roles in the armed forces require a science or engineering background, commerce graduates are eligible for entry into the Indian Army through CDS. Another path is the NCC Special Entry Scheme , which allows candidates with an NCC 'C' Certificate (Army Wing) to apply directly. Also, candidates can explore AFCAT (Air Force Common Admission Test) for ground duty (non-technical) roles in the Indian Air Force. These roles don’t require a science background and are open to commerce graduates. Hence, with the right preparation and eligibility, students from a commerce stream can proudly serve the nation in uniform.

Can we study BE after commerce group in 12th

No, students from the Commerce stream are not eligible to pursue BE directly after Class 12. The BE program is a technical and science-based ug degree that requires a strong Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM), which are part of the Science stream in 12th and 11th.

Most engineering entrance exams in India—like JEE Main, JEE Advanced, MHT CET, COMEDK, TNEA, etc.—are specifically designed for students who have studied the PCM subjects. Since Commerce students do not study Physics and Chemistry, they are not eligible to apply for these exams and, therefore, cannot enter a BE program.

but i would recommend that, if you're highly interested in engineering despite having a Commerce background, you have to complete 12th with PCM subjects again through National Institute of Open Schooling or a similar board and then appear for entrance exams.
