I would suggest you to first get aversed with the whole thing of Data Science, by taking up couple of courses on Udemy probably from Instructors like Jose Portilla or 365 Careers. You may have to invest 300-500 per course but do take it as an investment. Learn Python initially, followed by getting expertise in Python Programming using HackerRank Questions. Follwed by Couple of Courses im Data Science and Analytics, dealing with Data Extraction, Data Visualization, Data Mining as well as Machine Learning Fundamentals. You may also take up Guided Projects on Coursera, post applying for Financial Aid (You Usually Get it).

Once you are aversed with the whole concept, take up Projects with Your University Professors or Short Work From Home Data Science Internships, which may eventually make you prepared for a career in Data Science in the Long Run.

Nowadays, the specialization in artificial intelligence, big data, data science  has a big demand in the IT industry. So, if you go for artificial intelligence you be given more preference in a job. CSE is also a good branch. You can join in CSE branch without any specialization and take up an AI course for 6 months or some short duration which is conducted by many colleges and institutes. Nptel ( by IIT Madras ) is also conducting at a very low prices. You can go for specialization, if you are a tech addict and very much keen to study this course .
