Assuming it is 42 marks in GATE then according to 2020 statistics, GATE (EE) cutoff was 33.4 marks, and accordingly the rank may lie between 5000-10000. That may not get you top NIT's but you should keep a check on new NIT's like NIT, Silchar, Agartala, Raipur nor you

Since you are doing Diploma in Electrical Engineering you have more knowledge regarding labs and subjects than B.Tech students. You can join in B.Tech after completing your diploma through Lateral Entry. If you do B.Tech after Diploma then you have a very high chance of getting a good job

There are no disadvantage of doing B.tech Lateral Entry after completing diploma.
