You are free to write gate exam in any branch. But you should also check admission criteria. Each institute have different admission criteria you should go through brochure of all your dream college and check for branch in which you want to do mtech.

Please be rest assured that all the colleges in India especially the IITs, NITs, IIITs and other government colleges have strict policies wherein ragging is clearly deemed as illegal and prohibited and is considered a criminal offence. If found that any candidate has been part of the abuse then he/ she will be rusticated from the college and would also face judicial trial.
