Yes you can apply for improvement in only 3 subjects.

For improvement you can either apply for only 1 subject or for all the 5 subjects, according to your wish and requirement. Also the regular paper and the paper for improvement are non biased, you so can

2. Algorithms : Coreman. ( It may be difficult to read initially but this is the best book)
3. TOC : Only referred to notes and PDFs. Book usually followed is Ullman , Peterlinz
4. Compilers design : Aho, Ullman, Sethi ( the writing is quite easy
