Which is good for MBA in terms of scope in future: general management or MBA in one specialisation only

Suvakanta Sahu 9th Apr, 2020

Dear Silli ,

Hope you are doing well .General management and MBA in one specialization  both are not suitable  for all aspirants .It will totally depends upon you , for example  if you are coming from Bachelor in marketing background would rarely move to different industry like finance .If you having strong foundation in one of the management so my prefer to go for specialization .

But both are holding equal position when we are taking about career scope .

Thanks

sir frst of all a very happy gd mng to all if a student had some problem about payment that student is not an scholarship person general management quota person can u give her certificate back to her in case he had any problem with payment or family problem to discontinue her studies

iammohdshareef 1st Dec, 2019

Now there are laws that no Institution can withold the student's certificates. The Supreme Court has passed a judgement regarding this. But most students do not know this rule. You will have to talk to your college officials to help you give you back your certificates. In the beginning they will say No but you need to explain clearly and they will give your certificates but they will ask you for payment. But eventually they will give you your certificates.

With your NMAT percentile you can appear for the Hyderabad and Bangalore campuses of NMIMS and for ICFAI Business School Hyderabad. ICFAI  Business School has an excellent program for finance. There are several other colleges that accept NMAT scores but they won't be a very good option for you.

With your CAT scores you'll have plethora of colleges to choose from if you're interested in marketing and finance. These are a few colleges you can check out
  • IMT Hyderabad
  • ITM Navi Mumbai
  • IISWBM Kolkata
  • Globsyn Business School Kolkata
  • IMI Kolkata
  • NDIM New Delhi
  • JIMS Rohini and other colleges

is it possible to persue General Management program after graduation

Soumya Kanta Sarkar 27th Nov, 2019

The General Management Program or as we all know it by GMP is particularly equipped with the knowledge of training the employees of a company in managing the general operations. For example, analysis of company’s accounting information, dealing with the compensation structure, reduction of wastage in logistics and supply chain or looking after the sales data and deriving valuable insights from it.

The possible fields where you stand a chance of getting a job are:

  • Financial sector
  • Consultancy
  • M&A
  • General Manager in small and medium sized industries

The normal tenure for a General Management Course is 2 years with substantial amount of relevant work experience.

The colleges which offer General Management Program are:

  • Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi
  • Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad
  • Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore
  • Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta
  • JBIMS, Mumbai
  • XLRI, Jamshedpur

The Executive Program in General Management at:

  • IIM A(which is called Accelerated general Management Program) requires 5 years of relevant and proven work experience in addition to a minimum of 50% marks in graduation
  • IIM B, requires either first generation start up entrepreneurs without managerial experience or professionals with 3-5 years of work experience and in the age group of 23-29 years
  • IIM C, require graduates or post graduates with 50% marks and 1-5 years of relevant work experience
  • XLRI, requires graduation degree with a minimum of 5 years of managerial or supervisory experience
  • IIM L, requires a minimum of 3 years of post-qualification professional experience
  • IIM K, requires a minimum of 4 years of post-qualification professional experience

These are some of the good colleges from where you can dream of pursuing a career in General Management but it is wise to go for a full time 2-year MBA since the selection criteria is very stringent and so big companies come for placements. But if a glamorous placement is not your sole motive of going for an MBA, then you can think of these schools. But yes, for pursuing an executive course in General Management, you have to have substantial amount of prior work experience.

A choice of general management in MBA has flavours of all the different specialisations. You will be exposed to the functions of different verticals such as Finance, Marketing, Operations, HR, IT and more importantly the inter-functional engagement between these verticals. Taking your career forward, in quick succession, you will require knowledge of all these fields and will help you in solving various problems attached with them. The top management of any organisation needs to handle different verticals all by themselves and hence they need to know what is happening in different domains of their company. A skilled CEO would do justice to his post if he has a balanced knowledge of all the aspects of the business. If you consider my advice, go for a specialisation course instead of a general management course. But if you think you can handle all the functions involved in a business, then surely go ahead with general management.

All the very best!!
