The final selection into the IIT's or NIT's completely depends on the GATE score and category also matters a lot.
As you are scoring 36,It is not sufficient to get into NIT's.However you need to improve the score.

You have chances for following IITs like IIT Roorkee, IIT kanpur, IIT kanpur. Apart from these old you can get many new IITs. You can get almost all NITs. And colleges like IIIT Jabalpur, DTU delhi, COE pune etc..
