You will have to appear in JEE mains.The procedure for admission to NITs/IITs for diploma students or intermediate students is same.
You can appear in JEE mains and qualify the exam and then appear in JEE Advance.
There is nothing called lateral entry for diploma students in IITs.

IITs are best institutes and has more popularity across the globe. NITs are setup at very later stage, they are still struggling to setup their name. The facilities you get at IITs are much better than that of NITs.
