Both of these branches are less popular branches. But when you talk about Jadhavpur University chemical engineering is one of the best department of the college. It has almost 90% placements. And once you are placed in core industry in chemical engineering you would have a great future ahead.

I think the information you got is wrong. Because there is nothing mentioned about this in the guidelines. There are 197 seats vacant in Jadhavpur University this year.

This depends on your interest in the course first of all as both are among the reputed colleges. Though NIT is a tag in itself, Jadavpur University is actually better even in rankings and placements. Moreover IT stream has more scope than Mechanical anyway since you have opportunities

See it totally depends upon the availability of seats but you have a good chance of getting Mechanical Engineering in Jadavpur University. Your GMR is really good and you can expect a seat if it is available in first place. Go for it.
