Hey Mukul,
There is always confusion regarding the eligibility to study marine engineering if you have a diploma. This is because for enrolling into the course of marine engineering like the ME/M tech course in marine engineering or the graduate marine engineering course, or post graduate marine engineering course, an engineering degree is mandatory. But now there is a course called diploma in marine engineering or DME which is particularly for students who are diploma holders. However, not all diploma holders are qualified to pursue this course. Mechanical, Electrical, Marine, Naval Architecture, EEE etc are some of the course that are eligible. If machinist trade comes within the scope of this then you can definitely become a marine engineer.
Details regarding the course DME or diploma in marine engineering
The course has 2 academic years. It is a pre sea training course. This course specifically covers the technical aspects of marine engineering. Some of the areas of study are as follows:
Ship Construction
Ship Design
Marine Electrical and Electronics Systems
Safety Technology
Marine Engineering Drawing
Automation and Control
Hydraulics
Marine Machinery
Naval Architecture
Communication Skills
Once you successfully complete this Diploma course and after clearing MEO Class-4 Part A Examination, students will have to go through 6 months of compulsory sea service. After this stint and clearing safety courses, other training modules and tests, clearing MEO Class-4 Part B Examination, a cadet will be provided with Marine Engineering Officer Class 4 Certificate of Competency.
After 12 months’ worth experience on the sea, you can again appear for training modules and appear for MEO Class 2- Part B Examination. You have the option while pursuing the career to choose to appear for further training modules, courses and appear for exams. These exams will help you to achieve advanced competency certificates, like- Marine Engineering Class 2 Certificate of Competency and Marine Engineer Class 1 Certificate of Competency.
Eligibility
Diploma holders belonging to certain branches are eligible to pursue this course. Mechanical, Electrical, Marine, Naval Architecture, EEE etc are some of the course that are eligible.
Some institutions might further have a Minimum marks criterion. It is generally around 50-60% marks in final year of Diploma program.
Physical criteria
Candidates appearing for the course must be fit for a sea faring job. This is very important. Eyesight is also checked before admission. The vision of each eye must be 6/12 that too without glasses. Candidate should not be suffering from color or night blindness.
Hello Dunna,
If you want to do Marine Engineering you need to apply for IMU-CET which is conducted by Indian Maritime University for the Admission in its campuses as well as colleges affiliated to it.
To do so from IMU you need to clear the exam then sit for the counselling and after getting college in the counselling you have to clear Medical from D.G. shipping approved Doctors. And if you want to do it from other affiliated colleges you need to apply on their sites separately.
Fee structure for the IMU Campuses is around INR 2,25,000 and for the private colleges like TOLANI it is around INR 5,00,000
If you want to know more you can go to www.imu.edu.in
Hope this will help you. Feel free to ask any query.
Ennod chodikkada , njan parayam....marine engineering from government institutions like indian maritime university institutions are much less costly. But the best maritime institute in india is TMI where the fees is now like 17 lakhs for four years. i think other collage fees are not to be considereD.
hi seku nienu,

Dear Student,
Yes, Marine enigineering course do provide diploma course for the students which is a three year course. The minimum eligibilty for the course is that the students must have scored 50% aggregate marks in 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as complusory subjects or any other equivalent or higher academic course pursued from a recognized university. The admission process in diploma course is based on the entrance tests conducted by the university in which students are shortlisted for the final selection round, that is personal interview. Candidates persuing this course can work as a Port Managers, Maritime Educators, Second Marine Engineer, O.I.C of Engineering Watch, Ship operator, Chief Marine Engineer, Marine Surveyor, Technical Superintendent etc. with an average package of 4-8 lacs per annum on an average basis. The top universities in India for this course are:
Hello Rakesh,
As you said you have done Marine Engineering why you're not joining directly by approaching any shipping company with your documents, CDC and passport.
If you really want to do GME course from any college or Institute better to go for the college which has been opened by the shipping companies as they place you onboard their vessels so you don't have to wait for the placement the Institutes are Anglo Eastern Maritime Academy, Great Eastern Training Institute, Shipping corporation of India etc. Are among the good colleges to apply for GME course.
Feel free to ask any query, will be happy to help you.
All the best!!
Marine engineering includes the engineering of boats, ships, oil rigs and any other marine structure or vessel. Apart from this it also includes ocean engineering. a BE in Marine Engineering or Nautical Science and PG Diploma in Mechanical Engineering are the basic qualifications required to become a Marine Engineer. The minimum educational qualifications required for pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering is your plus two marks. For qualifying you need to have a good percentage in subjects like Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. This is a 4-year professional course. But there are colleges like Chennai School of Ship Management that offer Alternate Training Scheme (ATS which is for 3 years.
Physique is a criterion for qualification. Physical fitness is mandatory and there will be certain medical tests that are to be taken before entry into any college. The minimum height required is 150cms with a proportionate weight and proportionate chest with a minimum of 5-cm expansion. In addition to this there is also a medical fitness test for undertaking sea service. for this eyesight 6/6 without colour blindness is a must.
T S Chanakya, Mumbai, and the Marine Engineering Research Institute (MERI), Calcutta are some of the main training centers for Marine Engineering. There is a test called Indian Maritime University Common Entrance test. Park maritime academy CV ramen academy are some of the colleges participating in this all India test. But Selection to T S Chanakya and MERI is through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) which is conducted annually by IIT. You have to apply for JEE like how you would normally apply and then you have to submit a separate application to the Directorate General of Shipping, Jahaz Bhavan, W.H Marg, Mumbai 400 001.
A course in Marine engineering entails intense training to lead careers in ship repair and ship operation and function. The candidates will be given a knowledge of fundamental engineering sciences. They will also be exposed to specialized knowledge of theoretical and practical marine engineering aspects of marine engineering. A fairly basic knowledge of social sciences and humanities is also required. In addition to this, the course also enables the students to attain the criteria prescribed by Standards of Training, Certification and watch-keeping for sea-farers. The cut off for each college varies. Each year the cut off will depend on the difficulty of the question paper. There are different cut offs for the JEE exam and the IMUCET. There are colleges that admit students without an entrance test as well. Below is the details regrading the 2019 cut off.
https://engineering.careers360.com/articles/jee-main-cutoff
Refer this for more details regarding IMUCET
https://engineering.careers360.com/articles/imu-cet
for a better idea you can refer to the cut offs of previous year entrance tests. But do not depend largely on them as cut off vary according to the difficulty rate of the question paper.
