During your gate preparation your subjects will be just same as that of mechanical engineering but during paper you will write the subject code as MN which shows specialization or MTECH in mining .

Yes if you have done any kind of exam or appeared in anu of the exams then you can obviously for it. Even if you have not given any kind of exams for the same even tgen you can apply for the same in some private universities. Go for it
