I think 1 year is sufficient time for preparing for gate exam. So if you wishes to join any coaching class than you can do that. And make a schedule and study accordingly. Focus on the weaker section and topics and prepare very well.

Government engineering college, Barton Hill, Thiruvananthapuram college is rated as AAA by Careers360 which means it is an average engineering college With average placements and facilities. Though it is an average engineering college it is not that ideal. But for Mechanical Engineering it is good because

After completing the b.tech you can go with the campus placement. Or you can go with the gate where you can b placed in national level company.
Or the company will conduct the off campus interview you can apply there too

In which college do you want to know about the number of seats in mechanical engineering and at which level. It would be nice if you could be more specific.
Mechanical engineering is much better due to wider scope across PSU and Private sector and mor e opportunities and roles like Supplychain, Operations Logistics, Procurement, Bid and Project management, Manufacturing and. Design.
Civilengineering has limited scope across design and Urban planning, structural mechanics and Maintenance roles.
