Merchant Navy Eligibility Criteria for Both Male & Female:

Educational qualification:The minimum eligibility for courses in Nautical science and Marine engineering is 10+2 or an equivalent examination with physics, chemistry and mathematics.

AGE LIMIT:Candidate are required to satisfy the age limit criteria. They should be between 17-25 years of age when the course starts.

Candidate should also pass a medical fitness test for sea service under standard norms and with eyesight 6/6 with no colour blindness.

Candidates wishing to enter the navigational and engineering fields of Merchant Navy need to complete a Bachelors degree in Nautical Science or Marine engineering, before they can gain admission to the field.

Candidates have to beunmarriedIndian citizens (male or female).

Admission is through anentrancefollowed by a screening test and a main written examination.

Girls can also join Merchant Navy. As there are many girls who are already in officer cadre of Merchant Navy. In India girls can apply through Indian Maritime University (IMU). IMU conduct exam every year to join Merchant Navy.

Eligibility Criteria:-

1)- You should have completed 12th class with science stream.
2)- You should have minimum 60% marks in 12th.
3)- You should be unmarried.
4)- Your age should be below 20 years.

To join Merchant Navy after High School (Class 12th) you have to appear from IMU CET exam.Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test (IMU CET) is an all India online common entrance tests managed by the Indian Maritime University and is for everyone who wishes to join the coveted profession of Merchant Navy. A candidate can enroll for an undergraduate and postgraduate program under IMU CET. All the programs and courses are offered by IMU (Indian Maritime University) and its affiliated Institution.The 2018 IMU CET exam will be conducted in June 1st week. There are enormous employment opportunities in this field. Candidates who have finished the basic course inmerchant navycan getjobsvery easily through various consultants and placement agencies. Merchant navy fleet consist of cargo ships, container ships, barge carrying ships, tankers, bulk carriers, refrigerators ships, passenger ships, as well as roll off/roll on ships. The possibility of finding employment in cargo ships is more as compared to the others.

Companies that run merchant ships require trained people who can operate and maintain the ships. Some of these companies are: Chevron and Mobil of USA, Wallem Ship Management of Hong Kong, Denholm of UK, K Line, Bibby Ship Management, d'Amico etc. India too has its shipping companies, such as the Shipping Corporation of India, Great Eastern Shipping, Essar and Chowgule Shipping. Trained people are required for the three main departments of the ship: the deck, the engine and the service department.

AJunior Engineeron a ship can earn aroundRs. 30,000 per monthwith free boarding and lodging while signed on board the vessel. The next level is ofSecond Engineerand finally,Chief Engineeron a ship. As you keep getting promoted, your salary increases substantially. A Chief Engineer at sea earnsRs. 1.5 lakhs per monthor more net of taxes. It takes about 6-7 years for a Junior Engineer Officer to get promoted to the rank of Chief Engineer, depending on individual capabilities and job opportunities available.
