As per the reports mentioned on the official website, University Grants Commission (UGC) has recognised the NERIST Nirjuli. 

For NERIST admission to the Diploma in Civil Engineering, students should qualify the 10+2 examination with Science and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. Further, students have to appear and qualify the NEE-II examination conducted by the NERIST Nirjuli. Shortlisted candidates have to register for the counselling process for seat allotment, document verification and fee payment process.

Students who want to get admission into NERIST should meet the eligibility criteria for the course they wish to apply. The NERIST eligibility criteria are different for different courses. After meeting the eligibility criteria, candidates need to fill the NERIST NEE application form with all the details and submit it by paying the application fees. NERIST and SLIET are deemed-to-be-university. Both institutes have the same course structure: certificate, diploma, UG, PG and doctoral courses. NERIST Nirjuli is fully funded and controlled by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. Looking at the placement statistics 2021, NERIST is better as Rs. 3.60 Lakhs was the median salary offered to the UG and PG students while SLIET offers Rs. 3.50 Lakhs and Rs. 3.40 Lakhs to their UG and PG students respectively as a median salary.

The institute offers a total of 50 courses in different specialisations/streams. Diploma and B.Tech courses are offered in 6 specialisations each. However, M.Sc and M.Tech courses are offered in 4 and 10 streams respectively. There are 22 different streams for Ph.D course in which students can apply.
