my rank is 48000. what are chances of getting dnb psychiatry

kumardurgesh1802 10th Nov, 2024

Hello there,

With a NEET PG rank of 48,000, getting a DNB (Diplomate of National Board) seat in Psychiatry can be somewhat competitive but is still possible, especially if you are open to considering various locations and hospitals. Here's what to consider:

Chances of Getting DNB Psychiatry:

  1. Location Flexibility:

Better in Non-Metro Areas: Your chances improve significantly if you are open to joining DNB programs in smaller cities or less sought-after locations.

  2. Hospital Type:

Smaller or Mid-Tier Hospitals: Consider applying to mid-tier or smaller hospitals, which might have less competition for Psychiatry seats.

  3. Counseling Rounds:

Later Rounds: You might have a better chance in the later rounds of counseling when some seats remain vacant.

  4. Consider Alternatives:

Related Specialties: If Psychiatry is your primary interest, you might also consider related specialties where seats could be more available.

With a rank of 48,000, getting a DNB Psychiatry seat is possible, especially if you are flexible with the location and hospital. Participate actively in all counseling rounds, and consider a wide range of hospitals to maximize your chances.

Can I do MD in psychiatry directly after BSc in psychology? What are the steps I need to follow?

Nitin Kumar 5th Jun, 2024

No, you cannot do an MD in Psychiatry directly after a BSc in Psychology in India. An MD (Doctor of Medicine) is a postgraduate medical degree program in India. It requires MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) as the qualifying degree. BSc in Psychology is a non-medical undergraduate program.

The first step is to pursue MBBS from a recognized medical college in India. This typically takes 4.5 to 5 years to complete. You can appear for the NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) for admission into MBBS programs.

After completing MBBS, you'll need to qualify for NEET PG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Postgraduate Courses). This exam determines your eligibility for admission to postgraduate medical courses like MD in Psychiatry.

What i wanted to ask is Can i persue Psychiatry without MBBS? And what would be the pathway to that if i were to do so ?

Ankit 15th Jan, 2025

You cannot pursue psychiatry directly without an MBBS. To become a psychiatrist, you must first complete MBBS, followed by a Master's in Psychiatry (MD or DNB). However, you can pursue a career in psychology or counseling without an MBBS, focusing on mental health support.
