May we stay away from social media for that 1 year of preparation of neet? Or should manage it ?

kritiesse 12th Oct, 2020

hello aspirant,

being a student who also gave NEET once, this question is very common and some students also invest in button Nokia phones for less hassle. It is quite a big misconception though that people who go off social media score the highest. It actually depends on your mindset and how you manage your time. I, although, did go off social media for quite some different reasons. I had peers who were active on social media and yet got good marks because they knew and understood how to divide their time.

At the end of the day, if you're diligent enough to focus and Pass NEET, not even social media can stop you. But if you think, it distracts you from studying efficiently for minimum 5hours, you need to rethink your decision.

Hope this helped. good luck for your future!

plz give some simple steps to get rid of social media over usage .

saurabhkhade4699 23rd Sep, 2020

Hello Shyam,

To get rid of one distraction, you need to follow another good distraction. It won’t work like magic , you will have to be patient.Remind yourself again and again that it is working because it will definitely take some time to get over social media .

Some simple steps to get rid of social media over usage are:

1.Write down all the things you liked to do , Started doing these.

2.Then instead of tapping Facebook/ Instagram / Whatsapp etc , Try watching some productive channels on YouTube .

3.Started reading Quora feeds / answers .

4.Get engaged yourself in some household works

5.try to go out with friends .

So,Just get yourself up from bed/ chair / sofa and take some deep breaths and begin the process And share your progress.

If these doesnt work you should try them:

  1. Turn Off Your Notifications
  2. Get A New Hobby
  3. Spend More Time With family or Your Loved Ones
  4. Deactivate your accounts
  5. Remove phone apps
  6. Delete extra people from your friend list

As I am preparing for neet 2021 so is it right to have a look at social media just for refreshment for some time ?

priyaankasarkar Student Expert 10th Sep, 2020

What starts as a refreshment might soon turn to addiction because when it comes to social media. First you try checking out of curiosity what your friends are upto. Then you try comparing your life with theirs. And slowly it becomes an addiction. If you happen to read any exam topper's interview, he/she would stress on the importance of being away from social media. There is something called PATS Model in Psychology which the University of Toronto has published some time back.

Picking the Best Environment for you to study: This is important because you should feel secure and comfortable but not too comfortable where you might fall asleep.

Always reducing the visual distractions: Make sure you have nothing within your vicinity to distract you. Like keep your phone a side. Or sit away from the TV, Windows where you can see people.

Try to Eliminate Noise around you: If you are someone who can concentrate with music, make sure it is light music and nothing to distract you. It should increase your ability to concentrate and not distract you. If there is any noise that might distract you, use ear plugs or a fan. Trust me, if am being distracted by noise, I switch on the fan and it works.

Self talk to control Internal Distractions: When you are noticing that the mind is drifting aside, stop what you are upto and keep a checkmark on a piece of paper along with the time. Keep a track of these checkmarks and the timings. Talk to yourself that you understand you are being distracted but you also have to study. If it keeps bothering you, write down what is it that is bothering you and promise yourself that you will come back and look into that. Now that has been parked in the notebook, get back to studying

But if you can time your social media presence and strictly follow it, there should be no harm. To prepare for NEET, you can try our NEET Knockout package: https://learn.careers360.com/knockout-neet-may/

I really want to crack jee Im in class 12 but Im wasting too much of my time in social media and Netflix even though I try to uninstall the apps I tend to find other stuffs to keep me engaged I really couldnt get over this habit mine please suggest how could a reduce my distraction!

Sk Student Expert 2nd Jun, 2020

What we understand from what you have written is that you lack discipline.  Meaning you adore to do many things but lack the will power to implement.  The real reason is that you find these tasks to be rather painful and so you keep putting them off.  The brain will never want to do anything that causes pain and studies is one of them. In order to get out of this cycle, we can suggest the Pomo doro Method.

In the Pomo dora method, you concentrate for just 25 minutes at a time to your studies and then take a few minutes break. Then come back for another 25 minutes, after that another small break.  This way we can break down that big problem of yours into smaller but manageable ones.  If you practice for a week, then your subconscious mind will start to push you to start studying in earnest.

Also it is very important to exercise as exercise also releases Dopa mine, which is a feel good chemical and help builds better neural structures. Lastly when studying a difficult chapter and if it becomes difficult to understand – don’t break your head, do some exercise and then come back to tackle it.

In short, take small steps to achieve your real goal.

Good Luck!

  • Silent all the unnecessary notifications as some other app might lead to social media apps.
  • Set limits on apps like Youtube to remind you to take break.
