When a ball placed on the ground is pushed, it moves forward due to the applied force, but after some distance it gradually slows down and comes to rest because of frictional force. The friction between the ball and the ground acts in the opposite direction of motion and continuously reduces its speed until it stops completely; in addition, air resistance also slightly opposes the motion. Therefore, the main force responsible for the ball coming to rest is friction.
