There is no such criteria you can simply apply for JEE main but one condition is that you have passed 12th in 2016 so you now just have one try left for applying in JEE main.

Then he won't be able to apply for mains...if he had a try option...then that would have been different...

It's been 2 years since you have given your boards...the coming year I.e 2019 you can apply for JEE for the last time...no such eligibility criteria you may just go to the site and apply for it.
