- 1600: East India Company got royal charter for trade
- 1612: First factory established in Surat
- 1639: Madras (Chennai) founded as trading post
- 1757: Battle of Plassey - Robert Clive defeated Nawab, gained Bengal
- 1764: Battle of Buxar - control over Bihar, Bengal, Odisha
- 1765: Got Diwani rights (revenue collection) from Mughal Emperor
- 1798: Wellesley's Subsidiary Alliance policy began
- 1848-56: Dalhousie's Doctrine of Lapse annexed many princely states
- 1857: First War of Independence/Revolt ended Company rule
- 1858: Government of India Act - Crown took direct control via Viceroy
