The metallurgical and material branch deals with the properties of materials at microstructure level, the extraction of metals, the mechanical properties of materials, casting process and thermodynamics . these are the base of metallurgy. In these branch you will have lots of scope for research as we continusly need new metals with different properties. In terms of job you will be getting in iron and steel plants and also in non ferrous metal extraction plant like of aluminum, zinc etc..

But the problem is that there is not much job vacancy, but if you are smart enough than definitely you will grab a placemet with 8+ lakh in any company. There are very few colleges offering this course, so competition is not very high as in gate. So, rest depends upon you.
