In India, different NITs have different cutoffs. The cutoffs can vary according to your choice of NIT or the field of study you want to pursue. The cutoffs are also different for different categories and there exists a home state quota for NITs. The home state is basically the state from which you have completed your 12th(10+2) standard.

Since you're a general candidate you'll need a rank below 50000 to get a seat in an NIT. If you are aspiring for top NITs, your rank should be less than 10,000. However, newer NITs accept candidates with a rank greater than 50,000 in JEE Main.

Dear aspirant,

There is no minimum required rank needed for nits because these dynamics depends on various factors which changes every year depending on certain factors like number of candidates appearing in the examination, number of vacant seats in college, previous years cut offs and difficulty level of the paper.

But there is range of percentile as per the general category which is 95-100 to fetch good nits like Jamshedpur, durgapur, Silchar, allahabad, rourkela, Calicut, Trichy, warangal, surathkal.

For sc - st category a percentile of 84-90 percentile would fetch them core branches like mechanical, chemical, civil.
