ALL THE BEST FOR APRIL AND ADVANCE!!
As you have already figured out, You stand a good chance to get civil/chemical in some of the top NIT's of the country but I will advice you to choose your branch carefully and cautiously. You should only take the branch which excites you and not the one according to trend as there is at least some scope in every branch to progress if you will show dedication towards that branch.
Now coming to your question the branch with most scope in future or the trending branches of the time are-
1.Artificial Intelligence- This is currently being offered by only some institutions like IIT HYDERABAD currently but is one of the most hotshot branches currently
2.Computer Science
3.Information Technology
4.Mathematics and Computing- This branch offers mathematics as well as computer science which opens a lot of scope to go either in finance or IT or data science sector or pure mathematics.
5.Electronics/ECE
6.Electrical/EEE
Rest branches like mechanical, chemical, civil are also good and evergreen but there popularity and scope in industry has declined. If you want to pursue government job further you should go for one of the core branches i.e. Electrical, mechanical or civil but you will need to do hard work for that also
Hope this helps
Thanks and regards
Ayush
